  • Adrenal insufficiency: Dysfunction of the adrenal cortex results in adrenal insufficiency, characterized by inadequate cortisol and aldosterone production. Primary adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease) occurs due to adrenal gland dysfunction, while secondary adrenal insufficiency results from hypothalamic-pituitary axis dysfunction.
  • Adrenal hormone excess: Hypersecretion of adrenal hormones leads to conditions such as Cushing's syndrome (excess cortisol), primary hyperaldosteronism (excess aldosterone), and adrenal androgen excess (e.g., congenital adrenal hyperplasia).
  • Adrenal tumors: Adrenal tumors, including adenomas, carcinomas, and pheochromocytomas, can arise from the adrenal cortex or medulla, causing hormone imbalances and potential complications.
  • Adrenal emergencies: Conditions such as adrenal crisis (acute adrenal insufficiency) and pheochromocytoma crisis necessitate prompt recognition and intervention to prevent life-threatening complications.
