  • Transition: The tuning fork is then moved to the external auditory canal (AC) without stopping the vibrations. The patient is again asked to indicate when the sound is no longer heard.

The results of the Rinne test are interpreted as follows:

  • Normal hearing: In individuals with normal hearing or sensorineural hearing loss, the sound will be heard louder through air conduction than bone conduction (positive Rinne test).
  • Conductive hearing loss: If there is a blockage or problem with the middle ear, the sound may be heard louder through bone conduction than air conduction (negative Rinne test).
