Fertilization:

  • Sperm Journey: Sperm cells travel through the female reproductive tract, aided by cervical mucus, uterine contractions, and the release of enzymes from the sperm's acrosome.
  • Egg Activation: When a sperm reaches the egg, it releases enzymes that help penetrate the protective layers surrounding the egg. Once a single sperm successfully enters the egg, it triggers egg activation, preventing other sperm from fertilizing the same egg.
  • Fusion of Genetic Material: The genetic material from the sperm and egg combine, resulting in the formation of a zygote with a unique set of chromosomes.
  • Implantation: After fertilization, the zygote undergoes multiple divisions as it travels through the fallopian tube towards the uterus. Eventually, it implants into the uterine lining, initiating pregnancy.
