As the nerve impulse travels along a myelinated axon, it jumps from one node of Ranvier to the next, skipping the myelinated regions. This significantly speeds up the transmission of signals.
  • Action Potential Regeneration: The concentration of ion channels, particularly sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) channels, is high at the nodes of Ranvier. This localized concentration of ion channels enables the efficient regeneration of the action potential at each node, ensuring the faithful propagation of the nerve impulse along the axon.
  • Signal Amplification: The clustering of ion channels at the nodes of Ranvier amplifies the strength of the nerve impulse. This allows the signal to travel long distances without significant loss of amplitude.
