Introduction:

Lensometry is an essential diagnostic procedure performed by optometrists and ophthalmologists to measure the power and optical properties of eyeglasses and contact lenses accurately. This technique enables precise determination of the lens prescription, aiding in the correction of refractive errors and optimizing visual acuity for patients.

Principles of Lensometry:

  1. Focimeter: A focimeter, also known as a lensometer or lensmeter, is the primary instrument used in lensometry. It consists of a target chart and a telescope-like viewing system. The target chart displays lines and numbers that help determine the lens power and other important parameters.
  2. Vergence Principle: Lensometry is based on the principle of vergence, which refers to the bending of light rays as they pass through a lens. The lensometer measures the vergence of light emerging from the lens and calculates its optical power.

Measurement Procedure:

  1. Placing the Lens: The eyeglasses or contact lens is placed on the lensometer's platform, with the lens' optical center aligned with the instrument's axis.
  2. Focusing: The examiner focuses the lensometer's telescope on the lens surface to obtain a clear view of the target chart.
  3. Determining Sphere Power: The vertical lines on the target chart are used to measure the sphere power of the lens. The lensometer is adjusted until the target lines are in sharp focus, revealing the sphere power.
  4. Measuring Cylinder Power: For lenses with astigmatism correction (cylinder power), the horizontal lines on the target chart are employed. The lensometer is rotated to align with the cylinder axis, and the power is determined.
  5. Axis Measurement: The axis of cylinder power is determined by reading the angle on the lensometer's axis scale when the horizontal lines are in focus.
  6. Verification: The lensometer reading is compared with the prescription provided by the eye care practitioner to ensure accuracy.

Applications of Lensometry:

  1. Eyeglass Prescription Verification: Lensometry is used to verify the prescription of eyeglasses, including single vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses.
  2. Contact Lens Prescription Verification: For contact lenses, lensometry confirms the power, axis, and orientation of toric lenses.
  3. Lens Identification: Lensometry helps identify unknown or unmarked lenses, ensuring correct usage and prescription adherence.
  4. Lens Verification in Spectacles: In ophthalmic laboratories, lensometry is used to verify the optical properties of spectacle lenses before dispensing.

Conclusion:

Lensometry is a fundamental technique used in optometry and ophthalmology to accurately measure the power and optical properties of eyeglasses and contact lenses. By ensuring the correct prescription, lensometry plays a crucial role in providing patients with optimal visual correction and enhanced vision.
