Introduction:

Biohazard levels are used to classify biological materials based on their potential risk to human health and the environment. Levels of Biohazard:

  • Level 1: Level 1 biohazards are materials that pose minimal risk to humans and the environment. Examples include non-pathogenic bacteria and viruses, cell cultures, and lab animals. Precautions include basic hand hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and lab coats.
  • Level 2: Level 2 biohazards are materials that pose moderate risk to humans and the environment. Examples include moderately pathogenic bacteria and viruses, such as hepatitis B and C, influenza, and Lyme disease. Precautions include all Level 1 precautions, plus enhanced PPE such as respiratory protection and eye shields.
  • Level 3: Level 3 biohazards are materials that pose high risk to humans and the environment. Examples include highly pathogenic bacteria and viruses such as tuberculosis, SARS, and anthrax. Precautions include all Level 2 precautions, plus specialized PPE and strict containment procedures such as negative air pressure and controlled access.
  • Level 4: Level 4 biohazards are materials that pose the highest risk to humans and the environment. Examples include dangerous pathogens such as Ebola, Marburg virus, and Lassa fever. Precautions include all Level 3 precautions, plus the highest level of containment procedures, such as complete isolation and decontamination systems.

Precautions:

  • Training: All personnel should receive appropriate training in the handling of biohazardous materials, as well as in the use of PPE and safe work practices.
  • Engineering controls: This includes specialized equipment and facilities designed to minimize the risk of exposure, such as biological safety cabinets and negative air pressure rooms.
  • Administrative controls: This includes policies and procedures for handling biohazardous materials, including proper labeling, waste disposal, and decontamination procedures.
  • Personal protective equipment: This includes gloves, lab coats, respiratory protection, eye shields, and other PPE as appropriate for the level of biohazard.
