Introduction:

The autonomic nervous system regulates the body's involuntary functions, such as heart rate, breathing, and digestion. This system is divided into two branches: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the "fight or flight" response, while the parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for the "rest and digest" response. In this article, we will discuss the basics of autonomic pharmacology, including the different classes of medications used to modulate the autonomic nervous system.

SympatheticNervous System:

The sympathetic nervous system is activated in response to stress or danger, causing an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate. Medications that target the sympathetic nervous system are called sympathomimetics or adrenergic agonists. These medications can be further classified into alpha-adrenergic agonists, beta-adrenergic agonists, or mixed agonists.

Parasympathetic Nervous System:

The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for the relaxation and digestive response of the body. Medications that target the parasympathetic nervous system are called parasympathomimetics or cholinergic agonists. These medications can be further classified into muscarinic or nicotinic agonists.

Autonomic Antagonists:

Medications that block the actions of the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system are called autonomic antagonists or blockers. These medications can be further classified into alpha-adrenergic blockers, beta-adrenergic blockers, or mixed antagonists for the sympathetic nervous system. For the parasympathetic nervous system, they can be classified into antimuscarinic or ganglionic blockers.

Clinical Applications:

Autonomic pharmacology has many clinical applications, including the management of hypertension, heart failure, asthma, and glaucoma. Sympathomimetic medications are used to treat conditions such as anaphylaxis, asthma, and shock. Beta-adrenergic blockers are used to treat hypertension, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Parasympathomimetic medications are used to treat conditions such as urinary retention, gastrointestinal disorders, and glaucoma. Antimuscarinic medications are used to treat conditions such as overactive bladder, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and Parkinson's disease.
