Introduction:

Adenoviral conjunctivitis, commonly known as viral pink eye, is an eye infection caused by adenoviruses. It is highly contagious and is one of the most common causes of eye infections worldwide. Familiarity with its etiology, symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment options is crucial for effective management and prevention of its spread.

Etiology:

  • Caused by adenoviruses, a group of viruses that can infect the lining of the eyes, airways, lungs, intestines, urinary tract, and nervous system.
  • Transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, exposure to contaminated surfaces, or through respiratory droplets.

Symptoms:

  • Redness in one or both eyes.
  • Watery discharge, which is less thick than the discharge seen in bacterial conjunctivitis.
  • Irritation and a gritty feeling in the eye.
  • Swelling of the conjunctiva and eyelids.
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia).
  • Blurred vision due to mucous or watery discharge.

Diagnostic Evaluation:

  • Diagnosis is mainly clinical, based on history and characteristic signs and symptoms.
  • Swab samples from the conjunctiva for laboratory analysis can confirm adenovirus infection, but this is not commonly done in routine practice.
  • Slit-lamp examination by an ophthalmologist can reveal typical patterns associated with adenoviral infection, such as follicles on the conjunctiva and swelling of the lymph nodes in front of the ears.

Treatment and Management:

  • No specific antiviral treatment for adenoviral conjunctivitis; management focuses on symptom relief.
  • Cool compresses and artificial tears can provide symptomatic relief.
  • Topical antihistamines or decongestants may reduce discomfort and redness.
  • Strict adherence to hygiene measures to prevent the spread of the infection, including frequent hand washing and avoiding eye rubbing.
  • Patients should be advised to avoid sharing towels, linens, and eye cosmetics.

Prevention:

  • Good hygiene practices are key to preventing the spread of adenoviral conjunctivitis.
  • Avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms of conjunctivitis.
  • Using disposable tissues or towels to wipe the face and eyes.

Complications:

  • Although typically self-limited, adenoviral conjunctivitis can lead to more severe forms, such as keratoconjunctivitis.
  • In some cases, corneal involvement can lead to vision impairment.

Conclusion:

Adenoviral conjunctivitis is a highly contagious eye infection requiring proper management to alleviate discomfort and prevent its spread. Understanding its nature and adhering to preventive practices are essential for controlling outbreaks and protecting eye health.
