Our skin is an important multiple-layered component of our body. It has as many biological functions. Other than being the largest organ of our body, the skin is our body’s primary and most effective defense mechanism against all kinds of diseases and infections. Apart from shielding us from harmful foreign agents, it acts as the perfect barrier between our internal system and millions of dangerous microorganisms that pose a serious threat to us. It is thus appropriate that we treat our skin with great care.

One of the most important ways we can help protect our skin is by shielding it from the harmful rays of the sun. A lifetime exposure of the sun’s harmful radiation can scar our skin with signs of aging, such as wrinkles, age spots, and tanning, as well as by increasing our chance of developing skin cancer. A recent survey conducted by the International Skin Cancer Foundation shows that 1 out of every 5 Americans are now developing skin cancer because of skin health negligence. Apart from seeking the shade when the sun is at its brightest and wearing protective clothing, one can use an efficient broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day before stepping out in the sun.

Another way you might be harming your skin unintentionally is by smoking. The very act of smoking constricts the blood vessels in your face, decreasing the optimum blood flow that is required, which results in depletion of the essential nutrients required by the skin. Eventually, it damages the elasticity of the skin, making it look older and duller. To get the radiant glow on your face, you should quit smoking and start a healthy diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables.

One must have a healthy mix in their diet that will make your skin look and feel its best. Eating sufficient amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables everyday, along with whole grains and essential proteins, may help take care of most of the skin-related problems you are experiencing. A recent study suggests that a diet comprising of fresh green leafy vegetables and vitamins, such as vitamin C, promotes younger looking skin, as they are devoid of unhealthy fats and carbohydrates that various processed foods contain. Also, drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain healthy skin.

Stress and a lack of sleep can make your skin look dull with acne eruptions and dark circles. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep so that your skin can have the time to repair itself. Finally, managing stress and having a positive outlook on life is what will make your skin glow and look radiant.

Skin care and maintenance is also dependent on the type of skin you possess. According to some skin care experts, types of skin may be classified as normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, and sensitive skin. So in case you plan on trying out various cosmetic skin care products, do get the help of an expert who can guide you in the process to choose the best skin care for your unique type of skin.
