Adson's Sign: Understanding its Causes and Significance

Background/Definition of Adson's Sign:

Adson's sign is a clinical test that is used to diagnose thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). TOS is a condition in which the nerves, blood vessels, or both that pass from the neck to the arm become compressed. Adson's sign is performed by the healthcare provider to see if the patient has TOS.

Who gets Adson's Sign?

Adson's sign is usually performed on patients who have symptoms of TOS, such as pain in the neck, shoulder, or arm, tingling or weakness in the arm, or coldness in the arm.

What are the Causes of Adson's Sign?

Adson's sign can be caused by several factors, including a congenital defect in the structure of the thoracic outlet, injury to the neck or shoulder, or degenerative changes in the neck or shoulder.

What are the conditions causing Adson's Sign?

Adson's sign is used to diagnose TOS, which can be caused by a variety of conditions, including spinal cord injury, cervical rib, or a tight scalene muscle.

How do you Diagnosis Adson's Sign?

Adson's sign is diagnosed by a healthcare provider who performs the test and analyzes the results. The test is performed by having the patient inhale deeply, hold their breath, and rotate their head to one side. The healthcare provider will then assess for the presence of a pulse in the radial artery in the patient's wrist.

What are the Complications of Adson's Sign?

Adson's sign itself does not have any complications, but if left untreated, TOS can lead to permanent nerve damage or loss of function in the arm.

How do you Prevent Adson's Sign?

Adson's sign cannot be prevented, but the underlying causes of TOS can be prevented through maintaining good posture, avoiding repetitive motions that put stress on the neck and shoulder, and avoiding trauma to the neck and shoulder.

What is the Prognosis of Adson's Sign?

The prognosis of Adson's sign depends on the underlying cause of TOS. In most cases, TOS can be treated with physical therapy, pain management, or surgery.
