What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • Endometriosis of the Vulva
  • Extragenital Endometriosis

What is Vulvar Endometriosis? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Vulvar Endometriosis is a rare condition in which endometrial tissue, similar to the tissue lining the uterus, is found in the vulva, the external female genitalia. This can result in severe pain during menstruation or sex and nodules on the vulva
  • Women in their young to middle adulthood are higher prone to the development of this condition. The risk factors may include a family history of endometriosis and hormonal imbalances. The exact cause of Endometriosis of the Vulva is not fully understood
  • Imaging studies and a tissue biopsy may be used in the diagnosis of Vulvar Endometriosis. Following a diagnosis, the condition may be treated using pain medications and surgical interventions as needed. The prognosis is typically improved following early recognition and adequate treatment of the condition

Who gets Vulvar Endometriosis? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Vulvar Endometriosis is most commonly observed in women of reproductive age, typically between 25 and 40 years
  • The condition is observed worldwide, and all racial and ethnic groups are generally at risk

What are the Risk Factors for Vulvar Endometriosis? (Predisposing Factors)

The risk factors for Vulvar Endometriosis may include:

  • A history of endometriosis in other pelvic organs
  • Previous pelvic surgeries, especially those involving the vulva or nearby structures
  • Chronic inflammation in the vulvar region
  • Hormonal imbalances

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Vulvar Endometriosis? (Etiology)

  • The exact cause of Vulvar Endometriosis is not fully understood
  • It is believed to be linked to retrograde menstruation, where menstrual blood flows backward through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic and vulvar regions, leading to the implantation of endometrial cells

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Vulvar Endometriosis?

Vulvar Endometriosis may present with the following signs and symptoms:

  • Painful nodules or lumps in the vulvar region
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Painful or heavy menstrual periods
  • Cyclical pain that worsens during menstruation

How is Vulvar Endometriosis Diagnosed?

Diagnostic methods for Vulvar Endometriosis may include:

  • Clinical evaluation of symptoms and medical history
  • Pelvic examination to assess the vulvar region
  • Imaging tests, such as MRI or ultrasound scans, to visualize the extent of the condition
  • Biopsy of suspicious lesions for histopathological confirmation

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Vulvar Endometriosis?

Complications of Vulvar Endometriosis may include:

  • Chronic pain and discomfort
  • Formation of scar tissue and adhesions
  • Impact on sexual function and quality of life

How is Vulvar Endometriosis Treated?

Treatment options for Vulvar Endometriosis may include:

  • Pain management with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Hormonal therapies to suppress endometrial growth
  • Surgical excision or laser ablation of affected tissues

How can Vulvar Endometriosis be Prevented?

As the exact cause of Vulvar Endometriosis is not known, there are no specific prevention methods. Early diagnosis and appropriate management of endometriosis, in general, may help prevent its occurrence in the vulvar region.

What is the Prognosis of Vulvar Endometriosis? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

  • The prognosis for Vulvar Endometriosis depends on the extent of the condition and the effectiveness of the treatment
  • With timely and proper management, symptom relief and improved quality of life can be achieved for many women
