What is Verrucous Carcinoma of Bladder? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Verrucous Carcinoma of Bladder is an extremely rare form of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer is a general term for malignancies that involve and invade the tissues of the urinary bladder. Verrucous carcinoma is described as an uncommon and well-differentiated subtype of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). It presents an indolent growth and does not metastasize, but can be locally aggressive
  • Verrucous Carcinoma of Bladder is almost always associated with a parasitic infection, known as schistosomiasis. The infection is caused by Schistosoma haematobium, or the urinary blood fluke, which is found in parts of Africa and the Middle East. The incidence rate may be as high as 1 case per 20 individuals in the endemic regions. Occasionally, when it occurs in a non-schistosomiasis setting, chronic bladder inflammation is noted
  • The exact cause of formation of Verrucous Carcinoma of Bladder is not well known; there is no association with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The malignancy is mostly reported in middle-aged and older adults in the 50-60 years’ age group; a male predilection is seen. The tumor is diagnosed under a microscope, on examination of the cancer cells by a pathologist. However, a diagnosis of this carcinoma is reportedly difficult and challenging
  • The signs and symptoms of Verrucous Carcinoma of Bladder may include blood in urine (hematuria), burning sensation on urination, frequent urge to urinate, and abdominal/flank pain. The tumor masses are typically solitary and large sizes can cause obstruction of the urinary tract. Some tumors are locally-aggressive. Even though complications are infrequent, rarely, invasive squamous cell carcinoma may develop at the site of a verrucous carcinoma
  • The mainstay of treatment is surgical excision (partial or complete cystectomy) of the tumor. A combination of treatment measures that include surgery and radiation therapy may be considered by the healthcare provider. The prognosis is generally favorable in those with Verrucous Carcinoma of Bladder. An early diagnosis of the condition and absence of an associated squamous cell carcinoma at the site favorably affect the outcomes
