What is Urothelial Squamous Cell Papilloma? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Urothelial Squamous Cell Papillomas are extremely rare and benign subtypes of squamous cell neoplasms. These solitary lesions may originate from the urothelium, the urothelial cells that line the urothelial tract. Most of these lesions are seen in the urinary bladder, and sometimes in the urethra
  • It is important to accurately diagnose the tumor since it may resemble both benign and malignant urothelial tumors. Urothelial Squamous Cell Papilloma is definitively diagnosed under the microscope, on examination of the tumor cells by a pathologist
  • The exact cause of formation of Urothelial Squamous Cell Papilloma is presently not well-understood; the tumor is not associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The condition is mostly noted in middle-aged and older adults (age range 27-84 years and median age 62 years); with a male-female ratio of 3:2
  • The signs and symptoms of Urothelial Squamous Cell Papilloma may include blood in urine (hematuria), burning sensation on urination, frequent urination urge, and back pain. Complications of the tumor may include emotional stress in the affected individual and tumor recurrence following treatment (occasionally noted)
  • A surgical removal of Urothelial Squamous Cell Papilloma is often curative. The prognosis is generally excellent as the tumor is benign and presents a low recurrence risk. Regular follow-ups are generally recommended
