What is Urothelial Dysplasia? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Urothelial Dysplasia is the abnormal growth of cells on the urothelium (the urothelial cells that line the urothelial tract). It is also known as Low-Grade Intraurothelial Neoplasia (LG IUN). Urothelial Dysplasia can progress to carcinoma in situ in future, and hence, it is important to diagnose and treat the condition early
  • The condition is mostly observed in middle-aged and older men (average age 70 years). The most common site of Urothelial Dysplasia is the posterior wall of the urinary bladder when it is termed Urothelial Dysplasia of the Bladder. The exact cause of formation of the condition is presently not well-understood
  • This premalignant lesion can be seen sporadically (termed primary dysplasia) or concurrently with preexistent neoplasms of the urothelium (termed secondary dysplasia); the latter is more commonly observed than the former. The rate of progression of primary Urothelial Dysplasia to carcinoma is 14-19%, while that of secondary Urothelial Dysplasia is between 30-36%
  • No significant signs and symptoms are noted in over a third of the cases, while the remaining may present hematuria (blood in urine) and burning sensation on urination. The condition may be mistaken for conditions such as urothelial lesions with atypia, urothelial hyperplasia, and urothelial carcinoma in situ. Urothelial Dysplasia is diagnosed under the microscope on examination of the tumor cells by a pathologist
  • An early surgical removal of Urothelial Dysplasia is often considered with close follow-up. The prognosis is generally favorable with prompt treatment. It is reported that in between 3-10% of the cases, the affected individuals may succumb to the condition as it progresses to bladder cancer over a 10-25 year period
