What is Tick-Borne Encephalitis (Definition/Background Information)

  • Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral illness caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus. It is characterized by inflammation of the brain and can have serious complications. The condition generally affects adults
  • It is primarily spread through the bite of an infected tick, although it can also be transmitted through organ transplantation or close contact with an infected individual
  • The risk factors for Tick-Borne Encephalitis include living in or visiting areas where the disease is prevalent, engaging in outdoor activities that increase the risk of tick bites, and having a compromised immune system
  • The common signs and symptoms of Tick-Borne Encephalitis include fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea/vomiting, rash, and inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). In severe cases, the disease can lead to meningitis, coma, and even death
  • Tick-Borne Encephalitis is diagnosed through a combination of a physical examination and laboratory testing. A blood sample may be taken and tested for the presence of tick-borne encephalitis virus antibodies
  • There is no specific treatment for Tick-Borne Encephalitis. The treatment provided is generally supportive and may include the administration of fluids, medications to reduce fever and alleviate symptoms, and rest
  • To prevent the infection, taking precautions to avoid tick bites, such as wearing protective clothing and using insect repellents, are essential. It is also important to avoid close contact with infected individuals
  • The prognosis for Tick-Borne Encephalitis is generally good with adequate treatment. However, the disease can be severe and potentially life-threatening in some cases
