What is Tetraphobia? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Tetraphobia is fear or superstition associated with the number 4. The cause of Tetraphobia is rooted in cultural beliefs and practices, so people in East Asia, especially China, and Japan, are mostly affected by this type of phobia

  • Additionally, individuals who have anxiety or other phobias may be at higher risk of developing Tetraphobia.

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Tetraphobia? (Etiology)

  • The cause of Tetraphobia is rooted in cultural beliefs and practices.
  • The fear of the number four can be traced back to ancient Chinese beliefs, where the pronunciation of the number four sounds similar to the word for death.

How is Tetraphobia Treated?
