What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • Lymphadenopathy in Syphilis
  • Syphilitic Lymphadenitis

What is Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy is a condition that occurs as a result of secondary syphilis, which is a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum. It is characterized by the enlargement of lymph nodes and can occur in various parts of the body
  • Syphilis is a contagious bacterial infection transmitted through sex with an affected individual. Unprotected sex and not getting proper treatment for syphilis are risk factors for Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy
  • The treatment of Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy typically involves treating the underlying syphilis using antibiotics. The prognosis of the condition generally depends on its severity and underlying syphilis; with prompt and adequate treatment, the outcomes are good

Who gets Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy can occur in any individual with secondary syphilis
  • It is more common in those who have not received proper treatment for the infection
  • Both males and females are affected
  • Worldwide, no racial or ethnic group preference is noted

What are the Risk Factors for Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy? (Predisposing Factors)

The risk factors for Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy include the following:

  • Having unprotected sex
  • Having a history of syphilis or other sexually transmitted infections
  • Not receiving proper treatment for syphilis

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy? (Etiology)

Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy is caused by the spread of Treponema pallidum bacteria through the lymphatic system during secondary syphilis

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy?

The signs and symptoms of Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy may include:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes in various parts of the body
  • Pain or tenderness in the affected area
  • Redness or inflammation of the skin overlying the affected lymph node
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fever or fatigue

The signs and symptoms of the underlying syphilis may be noted.

How is Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy Diagnosed?

A diagnosis of Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy may involve the following tests and exams:

  • Physical examination and medical history evaluation (including the history of syphilis)
  • blood tests to detect antibodies to Treponema pallidum
  • Imaging studies (if needed)
  • Biopsy of the affected lymph node

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy?

Complications of Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy may include the development of neurosyphilis, which can affect the nervous system and lead to serious neurological symptoms.

How is Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy Treated?

  • Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy is treated with antibiotics, typically penicillin, to kill the Treponema pallidum bacteria
  • In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the affected lymph nodes

How can Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy be Prevented?

Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy can be prevented by practicing safe sex, getting tested regularly for sexually transmitted infections, and seeking treatment as soon as possible if you suspect you have syphilis.

What is the Prognosis of Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

  • The prognosis for Syphilitic Lymphadenopathy is generally good if the infection is treated promptly and effectively with antibiotics
  • However, if left untreated, syphilis can cause serious complications and even lead to fatalities
