What is Squamous Metaplasia of Placenta? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Squamous Metaplasia of Placenta is a common benign condition wherein there is squamous epithelium on the fetal surface of placenta and umbilical cord
  • A metaplasia is defined as the change of one type of epithelium to another type of epithelium. Squamous Metaplasia of Placenta is not a true metaplasia. The squamous epithelium in this benign condition is more mature and hence, easily recognizable under a microscope
  • The placenta is an organ that connects the developing fetus to the uterine wall. It is a disc shaped reddish brown structure that connects the fetus to the mother through the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord contains two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein
  • The normal function of placenta is to supply nutrients and oxygen to the fetus from the mother’s blood and remove wastes from the fetal body
  • There are no risk factors or causative factors associated with Squamous Metaplasia of Placenta
  • There are also no significant signs and symptoms or complications associated with Squamous Metaplasia of Placenta. The presence of the condition does not affect either the mother or baby
