What is Shedao Island Pitviper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Shedao Island pitviper (Gloydius shedaoensis) is a rare venomous snake that is exclusively found in Shedao Island of Liaoning Province, located in northeast China. The snake belongs to the subspecies of pit vipers, family Viperidae, and is also known as the elegant pitviper. Pit vipers are termed so, due to the presence of certain heat-sensing organs located in a recess/notch between their eyes and nostrils
  • Shedao Island pitviper preys mainly on small birds found on the island. It is a diurnal reptile that can be found in thick bushes, woodlands, and forests of the Shedao Island (called China’s snake island). The snake is also adept at climbing plants and trees
  • Shedao Island pitviper can grow from anywhere between 1.5 to over 2.5 feet in length. The snake is medium-bodied with a short tapering tail. The head of the snake is broad, flat, triangular-shaped, and distinct from its neck; it has a blunt snout. The body color is usually in shades of gray and brown, observed with dark “X” markings
  • Shedao Island Pitviper Snake Bites can cause moderate envenomation (venom injection) that may possibly result in deaths without early treatment. The venom is a potent mix of neurotoxins and hemotoxins that can cause non-specific symptoms in the victims
  • The signs and symptoms of Shedao Island Pitviper Snake Bite may include localized effects such as pain at the bite site, swelling, and blistering. Systemic symptoms may include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, shock, seizures, and paralysis
  • Currently, no suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is available for Shedao Island Pitviper Snake Bites. Symptomatic treatment is mainly considered that includes wound cleaning, IV fluid administration, and providing breathing support, as needed. The prognosis of the condition with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; deaths may take place from a lack of proper treatment
