What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • Incisional Endometriosis
  • Wound Endometriosis

What is Scar Endometriosis? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Scar Endometriosis is a rare condition characterized by endometrial tissue in surgical or trauma scars, most commonly in the abdominal region. It occurs when endometrial cells are inadvertently implanted during a surgical procedure or through a wound
  • Women in their young to middle adulthood who have undergone pelvic surgery are higher prone to the development of this condition. The exact cause of Scar Endometriosis is not well understood
  • It can cause pain and inflammation around the scar site and potential complications that include severe discomfort and recurrence of the condition. Imaging studies and a biopsy may be used in the diagnosis of Scar Endometriosis
  • Following a diagnosis, the condition may be treated using hormonal therapies and surgical interventions as needed. The prognosis of individuals with Scar Endometriosis is typically improved following adequate treatment of the condition

Who gets Scar Endometriosis? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Scar Endometriosis typically affects women of reproductive age who have previously undergone pelvic surgery or experienced abdominal trauma
  • However, it can also occur in women outside this age range or men, although it is extremely rare
  • The condition is observed worldwide, and all racial and ethnic groups are generally at risk

What are the Risk Factors for Scar Endometriosis? (Predisposing Factors)

The risk factors of Scar Endometriosis may include:

  • History of pelvic surgery: Women who have undergone pelvic surgeries, such as cesarean section, hysterectomy, or laparoscopy, are at an increased risk for Scar Endometriosis
  • Abdominal trauma: Any injury or trauma to the abdominal region that causes a wound or surgical incision may provide an opportunity for endometrial cells to implant and grow

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Scar Endometriosis? (Etiology)

  • Presently, the exact cause of Scar Endometriosis is not fully understood
  • The most widely accepted theory is the transplantation theory, where endometrial cells are inadvertently transferred to the surgical or traumatic wound site during surgery or injury

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Scar Endometriosis?

The signs and symptoms of Scar Endometriosis may vary from one individual to another, depending on the severity of the condition and the anatomical site involved. These may include:

  • Pain or tenderness at the scar site, often associated with the menstrual cycle
  • Presence of a palpable or visible lump or nodule at the scar
  • Swelling or inflammation around the scar
  • Cyclical bleeding or discharge from the scar, particularly during menstruation

How is Scar Endometriosis Diagnosed?

The diagnosis of Scar Endometriosis may involve the following exams and procedures:

  • Medical history assessment: Evaluation of symptoms, surgical or trauma history, and risk factors
  • Physical examination: Palpation of the scar site to detect any nodules or lumps and assess tenderness
  • Imaging tests: Ultrasound or MRI scan may be used to visualize the scar tissue and assess its characteristics
  • Biopsy: Surgical removal of scar tissue for microscopic examination to confirm the presence of endometrial cells

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Scar Endometriosis?

The possible complications of Scar Endometriosis include:

  • Recurrence: Scar Endometriosis can recur even after surgical removal of the affected tissue
  • Severe pain and discomfort: The condition can cause chronic pain and discomfort, particularly during menstruation

How is Scar Endometriosis Treated?

The treatment options for Scar Endometriosis may include

  • Surgical excision: The primary treatment for Scar Endometriosis is surgical removal of the affected tissue
  • Hormonal therapy: In some cases, hormonal medications such as birth control pills or GnRH agonists may be prescribed to suppress the growth of endometrial tissue and alleviate symptoms

How can Scar Endometriosis be Prevented?

There are no specific methods to prevent Scar Endometriosis. However, careful surgical techniques and proper wound management can help reduce the risk of inadvertent implantation of endometrial cells during surgical procedures.

What is the Prognosis of Scar Endometriosis? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

With appropriate treatment, the prognosis for Scar Endometriosis is generally good.

  • Surgical excision of the affected tissue provides relief from symptoms in most cases
  • However, regular follow-up is essential to monitor for any recurrence or complications
