What is Retrocuspid Papilla? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Retrocuspid Papilla (RCP) is a small and benign protrusion of unknown cause, seen on the gums of the lower jaw mostly behind the canine tooth. RCP is a common and asymptomatic condition that is generally noted in young children
  • In a vast majority, there is no requirement for treating Retrocuspid Papilla since the condition is usually symptomless and no complications are noted. The prognosis of the condition is typically excellent

Who gets Retrocuspid Papilla? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Retrocuspid Papilla (RCP) is generally observed in children below age 5; some are seen at birth. It may be present beyond this age group in older children and adults too
  • According to medical literature, nearly 75% of the children in this age group presents RCP. About 10% of the cases are known to persist into adulthood
  • Both males and females are affected, although a female preference is noted
  • Worldwide, there is no racial or ethnic preference observed

  • In most cases, there is no pain or oral discomfort observed, and the condition is typically asymptomatic

How is Retrocuspid Papilla Diagnosed?

A diagnosis of Retrocuspid Papilla may involve the following exams and procedures:

  • Physical examination of the individual and medical history evaluation
  • Oral cavity examination
  • Skin biopsy, if necessary: A skin biopsy is performed and sent to a laboratory for a pathological examination. The pathologist examines the biopsy under a microscope. After putting together clinical findings, special studies on tissues (if needed) and with microscope findings, the pathologist arrives at a definitive diagnosis
