  • Retinal Chromopsia

What is Retinal Chromatopsia? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Retinal Chromatopsia is a subgroup of chromatopsia that is specific to the retina that often results from macular edema
  • Chromatopsia is a visual condition in which the patient has excessive sensitivity to one color, leading to objects appearing tinged with that color
  • The many variations of chromatopsia incorporate the different possibilities of colors to which the patient can be sensitive

Incidence:

  • Individuals of all age groups and gender may be affected
  • There is no racial or ethnic preference noted worldwide

Risk factors and Cause:

  • Retinal Chromatopsias can result from macular edemas - excess tissue growth on the macula of the eye. The macula is the region of the retina that provides detailed vision
  • They can also result from retinal hemorrhages, leading to excess blood in the retina. This excess blood can lead to cell toxicity in the retina and changes in their sensitivity

Signs and symptoms:

  • Seeing unnaturally colored objects
  • Objects appear tinged with a color

Diagnosis:

  • A diagnosis of Retinal Chromatopsia may involve a complete eye exam and testing of color perception to aid in the diagnosis
  • Neural imaging techniques, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), can be used to determine cells in the eye that may cause the condition
  • Slit-lamp exams may be ordered to observe retinal hemorrhages if any

Treatment:

  • The treatment of Retinal Chromatopsia involves consultation with a healthcare provider before taking suitable action, as each individual will have a different experience
  • It primarily involves treating macular edema or retinal hemorrhage

Prevention: This depends on the underlying cause.

Prognosis:

  • The prognosis depends on the underlying cause of Retinal Chromatopsia
  • With early diagnosis and adequate treatment, the outcomes can be improved
