What is Redtail Coral Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

• The redtail coral snake (Micrurus mipartitus) is a moderately venomous snake found in Central and South American nations of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela. The snake belongs to the Elapidae family that generally includes slender and swift moving snakes, of genus coral snakes (Micrurus) that form a large group of elegant and ‘mostly’ brightly colored and banded venomous reptiles. There are several subspecies of Micrurus mipartitus
• The body of the snake is slender to medium, and it has a small, rounded head and blunt snout. The head and neck of the snake are almost continuous (same size). The snake’s body is typically cylindrical and uniform in size; it has a small and thick tail. The tail does not mimic the head, such as noted in some other coral snake species
• Like many colorful and glossy coral snakes, the redtail coral snake is characterized by a black head with a red-orange band. The snake’s body presents broad black rings separated by narrow white, cream, pink, or red rings. The snake’s tail may have alternating black and red-orange bands. The snake may range in size from about 2 feet to about 4 feet in length
• The redtail coral snake is terrestrial and generally feeds on small lizards, including geckos, and other snakes. The snake is found in lower montane wet forest and cloud forest. It is also often found in coffee plantations and near to human settlements. The snake may be seen in altitudes between 4,600 to 7,800 feet (1,400 to 2,400 m)
