What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • Endometriosis of the Rectum

What is Rectal Endometriosis? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Rectal Endometriosis is a type of endometriosis where endometrial-like tissue, similar to the tissue lining the uterus, grows on or inside the rectum. This abnormal growth can lead to pain in the rectum, bowel symptoms, and discomfort
  • Women in their young to middle adulthood are higher prone to the development of this condition. The risk factors may include a family history of endometriosis and nulliparity. The exact cause of Rectal Endometriosis is not fully understood
  • Pelvic exams and imaging studies may be used in the diagnosis of Endometriosis of the Rectum. Following a diagnosis, the condition may be treated using pain medications and surgical interventions as needed. The prognosis is typically improved following early recognition and adequate treatment of the condition

Who gets Rectal Endometriosis? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Rectal Endometriosis primarily affects women of reproductive age, typically between 25 and 40 years
  • It is more commonly seen in women diagnosed with endometriosis in other locations
  • The condition is observed worldwide, and all racial and ethnic groups are generally at risk

What are the Risk Factors for Rectal Endometriosis? (Predisposing Factors)

The risk factors for Rectal Endometriosis may include:

  • A history of endometriosis in other pelvic organs
  • Family history of endometriosis
  • Never having given birth (nulliparity)

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Rectal Endometriosis? (Etiology)

  • The exact cause of Rectal Endometriosis is not fully understood
  • It is believed to result from the backward flow of menstrual blood through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity, leading to the implantation and growth of endometrial tissue on or in the rectum

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Rectal Endometriosis?

The signs and symptoms of Rectal Endometriosis may vary from one individual to another and may be mild or severe. These may include:

  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Rectal bleeding during menstruation
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Rectal pain or discomfort
  • Pelvic pain that worsens during menstruation

How is Rectal Endometriosis Diagnosed?

Diagnostic procedures for Rectal Endometriosis may include:

  • Medical history and symptom assessment
  • Physical examination
  • Pelvic examination to check for abnormalities or masses near the rectum
  • Transvaginal ultrasound to visualize the pelvic organs and identify endometrial growths
  • MRI or CT scans to obtain detailed images of the pelvic area and rectum
  • Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy in order to directly visualize the rectum and take biopsies if necessary

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Rectal Endometriosis?

The complications of Rectal Endometriosis may include:

  • Bowel obstruction or stricture
  • Infertility (in severe cases)

How is Rectal Endometriosis Treated?

Treatment options for Rectal Endometriosis may include:

  • Pain management: To alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life
  • Hormonal therapies: To regulate hormone levels and reduce endometrial growth
  • Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be undertaken to remove endometrial growths from the rectal area

How can Rectal Endometriosis be Prevented?

Presently, specific prevention methods for Rectal Endometriosis are not available. Early diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis, in general, may help prevent its spread to the rectum.

What is the Prognosis of Rectal Endometriosis? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

  • The prognosis of Rectal Endometriosis depends on the extent of the condition, response to treatment, and the overall health of the individual
  • With appropriate management, many women can find relief from symptoms and improve bowel function
