What is Pope's Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Pope's bamboo pitviper (Trimeresurus popeiorum) is a mildly venomous snake found in southeast Asia and parts of the Indian subcontinent, in the countries of Cambodia, India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The snake belongs to the subspecies of pit vipers, family Viperidae. Pit vipers are termed so, due to the presence of certain heat-sensing organs located in a recess/notch between their eyes and nostrils
  • Pope's bamboo pitviper can grow from under 1.5 feet to slightly over 3 feet in length. It preys on a variety of animals including small mammals (rodents), frogs, lizards, and small birds. It is a nocturnal hunting reptile that inhabits low bushes and mountain sides of the tropical forests in between altitudes of 3,000 and 4,900 feet (about 900 to 1,500 m). The snake is generally found on plants and trees near rivers and streams
  • The snake has a slender to medium-sized cylindrical body with a moderately short and red-brown tail. The head of the snake is elongated with a pointed snout, slightly broad, triangular-shaped, and distinct from its neck. The body color of the Pope's bamboo pitviper is uniformly (slightly) dark green, with lighter green-yellow belly color. Some snake species present white/yellow stripe (with red-orange dots or stripes) along the sides of the belly that may extend up to its head (lower jaw line)
  • Human contact with the pitviper is uncommon; even though the snake is frequently seen near tea plantations in the endemic areas. It is not an aggressive reptile but may defend itself by opening its mouth wide to warn intruders, if disturbed. In case of further provocation, the snake can strike furiously and rapidly
  • Pope's Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bites can cause envenomation (venom injection) that may rarely result in complications without treatment. From research on related species, it is believed that the venom may be a mix of hemotoxins that may cause variable symptoms including bleeding issues and shock
  • The signs and symptoms of Pope's Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bite may include mild to moderate localized effects, such as pain at the bite site, swelling, and blistering. Systemic symptoms may rarely include tissue necrosis, headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and collapse
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, intravenous fluid administration, blood transfusion, and respiratory support, as needed. The prognosis of Pope's Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good
