What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • Pericytoma with Chromosomal Translocation t(7;12)

What is Pericytoma with t(7;12)? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Pericytoma with t(7;12) form an extremely rare group of tumors that are characterized by the presence of chromosomal translocation t(7;12). The cell of origin of these tumors are unknown, and the tumors are generally considered benign
  • These tumors may be observed as asymptomatic and painless nodules in the mouth, stomach, or bone. Pericytoma with t(7;12) may affect individuals of any age group
  • In a majority of cases, a simple surgical excision and removal of the tumor is considered curative. The prognosis for Pericytoma with t(7;12) is excellent with suitable treatment, since these are mostly benign tumors

Who gets Pericytoma with t(7;12)? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Individuals of all racial and ethnic background may be affected

What are the Risk Factors for Pericytoma with t(7;12)? (Predisposing Factors)

  • Currently, no risk factors have been identified for Pericytoma with t(7;12)

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Pericytoma with t(7;12)? (Etiology)

The cause of development of Pericytoma with t(7;12) is due to genetic factors. Currently, defects have been noted in the following genes:

  • ACTB-GLI1 gene fusion due to chromosomal translocation, namely t(7;12)(p22;q13)
  • The presence of chromosomal translocation t(7;12) defines the tumor

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Pericytoma with t(7;12)?

The signs and symptoms of Pericytoma with t(7;12) include:

  • It usually occurs as a single painless nodule
  • A visible swelling or lump may be noticed at the affected site
  • The tumors are considered as ‘mostly’ benign
  • The soft tissues or bone may be affected
  • The tumors have been reported in the mouth (involving the tongue, in 3 cases), in the stomach (called gastric pericytoma), the calf muscle, and ankle (involving the bone)
  • The tumors may cause site-specific signs and symptoms

How is Pericytoma with t(7;12) Diagnosed?

A diagnosis of Pericytoma with t(7;12) may involve the following:

  • A thorough medical history and physical examination
  • Radiological studies (X-rays, CT, MRI scans) of the affected region
  • Molecular testing of the tumor
  • Tissue biopsy: A tissue biopsy is performed and sent to a laboratory for a pathological examination. The pathologist examines the biopsy under a microscope. After putting together clinical findings, special studies on tissues (if needed) and with microscope findings, the pathologist arrives at a definitive diagnosis

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Pericytoma with t(7;12)?

  • Typically, no complications have been associated with Pericytoma with t(7;12)
  • The tumor is mostly benign and no recurrence or tumor metastasis have been noted

How is Pericytoma with t(7;12) Treated?

The treatment of Pericytoma with t(7;12) may involve the following:

  • A complete surgical excision, which can result in a cure
  • According to scientific reports, chemotherapy, administered prior to surgery, has been found to be ineffective
  • Follow-up care with regular screening and check-ups are important and encouraged

How can Pericytoma with t(7;12) be Prevented?

Currently, there are no known methods to prevent Pericytoma with t(7;12) occurrence.

What is the Prognosis of Pericytoma with t(7;12)? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

The prognosis for Pericytoma with t(7;12) is excellent with appropriate treatment, since the tumor is typically benign.
