What is Nicobar Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Nicobar bamboo pitviper (Trimeresurus labialis) is a mildly venomous snake found in the group of Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, belonging to India. The snake belongs to the subspecies of pit vipers, family Viperidae. Pit vipers are termed so, due to the presence of certain heat-sensing organs located in a recess/notch between their eyes and nostrils
  • The Nicobar bamboo pitviper can grow from less than 1.5 feet to a little over 2 feet in length. It preys on a variety of animals including rodents, frogs, lizards, and birds. It is a nocturnal reptile that inhabits the dry forest and cultivated areas in the endemic regions (Nicobar Islands). The snake is known to climb small trees and plants during daytime
  • The snake has a medium-sized body with a short tail. The head of the snake is triangular-shaped and distinct from its neck; it is also generally darker than the body. The body color is non-uniformly light-to-dark brown with transverse markings and blotches. The snake’s belly is generally brown and even-colored
  • Human contact with the snake is very uncommon and not much information is available. Like other bamboo pitvipers, the Nicobar bamboo pitviper may bite under slight provocation. Nicobar Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bites can cause envenomation (venom injection) and occasionally result in complications without treatment. The venom may contain hemotoxins that can cause variable symptoms in the victims including bleeding issues and shock
  • The signs and symptoms of Nicobar Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bite may be similar to other bamboo pitvipers and can include localized effects such as pain at the bite site, swelling, and blistering. Systemic symptoms may include tissue necrosis, headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, lightheadedness, and collapse
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, intravenous fluid administration, blood transfusion, and respiratory support, as needed. The prognosis of Nicobar Bamboo Pitviper Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good
