What is Nested Urothelial Carcinoma? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Nested Urothelial Carcinoma is a rare subtype of invasive urothelial carcinoma (UCC), a form of malignancy of the urothelium (urothelial cells that line the urothelial tract). It is an aggressive form of invasive UCC
  • Nested Urothelial Carcinoma is diagnosed under the microscope, on examination of the cancer cells by a pathologist. A diagnosis of the nested subtype is particularly challenging and difficult; it may be misdiagnosed as benign proliferation of von Brunn nests. The classification of the tumor is important, as it may dictate the type of treatments to be provided and the overall outcomes
  • The exact cause of Nested Urothelial Carcinoma is presently unknown; the carcinoma is associated with TERT promoter gene mutations. The condition is noted in individuals aged 41 to 83 years, mostly in men. Many contributory factors, such as smoking (a significant risk factor), occupational exposure to chemicals, and prior radiation therapy, are noted
  • The signs and symptoms of Nested Urothelial Carcinoma usually include blood in urine (hematuria), burning sensation on urination, back pain, and urinary tract infections. During its advanced stages, the cancer may metastasize to the lymph nodes and other organs. This cancer may coexist with other forms of urothelial carcinoma subtypes
  • The treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy based on the healthcare provider’s assessment. Individuals with Nested Urothelial Carcinoma typically have a poor prognosis. The malignancy is known to be persistent, difficult to treat, and presents recurrences
