What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • MPC of the Genitourinary System
  • MPC of the Urogenital System
  • Myopericytoma of the Urogenital System

What is Myopericytoma of the Genitourinary System? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Myopericytoma (MPC) tumor is a rare, benign tumor arising from cells that surround the blood vessels
  • Myopericytoma of the Genitourinary System is rarely seen in the genitourinary tract; the genitourinary or urogenital system includes the urinary and genital organs
  • The most frequent sites are the kidneys and urinary bladder

Incidence:

  • Kidney tumors are seen only in adults with preference for males
  • All races and ethnic groups are at risk

Risk factors:

  • When myopericytoma forms at other locations (outside the urogenital system), a positive family history has been noted
  • However, so far, no family history is recorded for Myopericytoma of the Genitourinary System

Cause:

  • The cause of tumor formation is unknown
  • Generally, genetic abnormalities at other sites are reported, of which frequently observed is PDGFRB gene mutation. But these are not reported in tumors involving the genitourinary system

Signs and symptoms:

  • The tumors can arise in the kidney and urinary bladder
  • Depending on the location of the tumor the signs and symptoms vary
  • Kidney tumors may remain asymptomatic
  • Individuals with tumors in the urinary bladder present blood in urine, painful urination, and changes in urination frequency
  • Kidney tumors are typically well-defined
  • Genitourinary tract tumors may range in size from 18-73 mm

Diagnosis: In kidney, these are discovered incidentally, when the patient is examined for other medical conditions.

  • Blood and urine tests
  • Radiological studies
    • Ultrasound of abdomen
    • CT and MRI scan of abdomen
  • Tissue biopsy of the tumor mass can help achieve a definitive diagnosis:

Complications:

  • Emotional stress
  • Incomplete removal can rarely result in tumor recurrence

Treatment:

  • Treatment depends on the location and the size of the tumor
  • Wait and watch approach for small and asymptomatic tumors
  • Surgery to remove the tumor for large and symptomatic tumors

Prevention: Presently, it is not possible to prevent the formation of Myopericytoma of the Genitourinary System.

Prognosis:

  • Benign tumor; complete tumor removal via surgery is curative
  • Recurrence is very uncommon

Outside the genitourinary system, malignant tumors have been very infrequently noted with poor prognosis.
