What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as /Synonyms)

  • Mucous Cyst of the Oral Mucosa
  • Mucous Extravasation Cyst
  • Oral Mucocele

What is Mucocele of the Lip? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Mucocele of the Lip is a common benign condition that results in mucous accumulation on the lip due to certain abnormalities in the minor salivary glands. It is also known as an Oral Mucous Cyst, and usually develops from minor trauma to the region
  • The cyst is visible as a dome-shaped glassy lesion on the upper or lower lip accompanied by redness and discomfort. A mucous cyst may form anywhere within the mouth, but they are most commonly found on the lip
  • In many individuals, a Mucocele of the Lip may heal spontaneously within a few weeks. However, in some cases, appropriate treatment, such as laser excision or corticosteroid injections, may be necessary

Who gets Mucocele of the Lip? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Mucocele of the Lip may form in individuals of any age group, but is more common in the age category of 10 and 25 years
  • Both males and females are equally affected
  • This benign cyst is commonly observed around the world, and no racial or ethnic predilection is noted

What are the Risk Factors for Mucocele of the Lip? (Predisposing Factors)

The following factors may predispose an individual towards developing a Mucocele of the Lip:

  • Trauma to the oral cavity, such as cheek/lip biting, causing injury to the minor salivary glands
  • Injury from misaligned or newly developing tooth
  • Lip piercings
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Use of certain toothpastes

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Mucocele of the Lip? (Etiology)

  • A Mucocele of the Lip develops from the retention or leakage of mucous material or saliva from the minor salivary glands into the surrounding tissues, resulting in mucous-filled cavities
  • The cause of development of the cyst is usually secondary to a minor trauma to the lips or mouth (cheek or gums)

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Mucocele of the Lip?

The signs and symptoms of a Mucocele of the Lip include:

  • Presence of a fluid-filled lump that appears like a transparent glass bead
  • In about 75% of the cases, the lower lip is involved
  • The mucocele may be superficial (present on the surface of the lip) or deep (develop in the subcutaneous region)
  • Cystic lesions on the surface are usually blue-violet in color, while the deeper cysts may take on the lip color or have a reddish discoloration (mostly when bleeding into the cyst occurs)
  • The lesions are usually small-sized; but, larger lesions measuring 2.5-3.0 cm in size have been noted
  • A solitary lesion or multiple lesions may be observed
  • Lesions may present mild pain, tenderness, and discomfort
  • Constant rubbing or licking the mucocele may cause it to become rough
  • Superficial lesions may rupture to minor trauma, caused by activities such as eating or chewing

How is Mucocele of the Lip Diagnosed?

The diagnosis of Mucocele of the Lip is as follows:

  • A thorough physical examination with evaluation of medical history
  • Oral examination
  • Biopsy of the lesion, if necessary, to rule out other oral cavity conditions

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Mucocele of the Lip?

In most cases, there are no significant complications from Mucocele of the Lips. However, in some individuals, the following may be noted:

  • Persistence of the cystic lesion, often for many weeks
  • Frequent recurrence of the mucocele resulting in a permanent nodule on the lip

How is Mucocele of the Lip Treated?

Mucocele of the Lip is a benign condition. Mucoceles that form superficially may not need to be treated; they are known to resolve on their own within a few weeks. If needed, the following treatments may be suggested by the healthcare provider:

  • Removal of the mucocele through a minor surgical procedure
  • Marsupialization of the lesion
  • Intralesional corticosteroid injection
  • Cryotherapy
  • Laser removal (ablation) of the cyst

How can Mucocele of the Lip be Prevented?

The risk for development of a Mucocele of the Lip may be minimized by considering the following steps:

  • Maintaining good oral hygiene
  • Avoiding constant lip or cheek biting
  • Holding regular/annual dental checkups to detect any dental health issues early

What is the Prognosis of Mucocele of the Lip? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

  • The prognosis of Mucocele of the Lip is typically excellent since it is a benign condition that tends to resolve spontaneously in most cases
  • In some individuals, the mucous cyst may take several weeks, months, or even years to heal. In such prolonged cases, a complete surgical excision (of the cyst and surrounding salivary glands) may be considered
