What is Mountain Patchnose Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Mountain Patchnose snake (Salvadora grahamiae) is a non-venomous snake that belongs to the largest snake family called Colubridae. This land-dwelling snake ranges in size from between 2 to 4 feet in length. It is seen in altitudes up to 9,200 feet (2,800 m) and found in the nations of Mexico and United States of America (south central regions)
  • The snake inhabits mountainous forests with evergreen and coniferous trees. Some species are found in the prairie lands with patchy shrubs and bushes. The Mountain Patchnose snake typically hides beneath rocks or inside rodent burrows and hunts during the day. Its diet consists mainly of small lizards and mammals (rodents)
  • It has a medium slender body with a relatively long tail. Its head is slightly larger than its neck, and the snake has moderately large eyes. The body of the snake is brown/tan or cream and its underbelly pale cream; the tail may present pink or peach underside. The characteristic feature of Mountain Patchnose snake is the three stripes that run along the length of the snake. The central stripe is usually light tan to cream, but the two outer stripes are darker (black or brown)
  • This fast-moving and very agile snake is not known to be aggressive. Even though human contact with this snake is not very uncommon, Mountain Patchnose Snake Bites are rare. Also, since the snake is generally non-venomous to humans, the snake bite does not cause any envenomation and there is no lethality potential
  • There may be some mild effects at the bite site, including pain, swelling, and local numbness. However, no significant systemic symptoms are observed. A treatment of the condition may involve wound cleaning, steps to prevent secondary infections, and tetanus shots, as needed. Individuals with Mountain Patchnose Snake Bites have usually excellent prognoses with proper treatment
