What is Micropapillary Urothelial Carcinoma? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Micropapillary Urothelial Carcinoma is a rare aggressive subtype of invasive urothelial carcinoma (UCC), a form of malignancy of the urothelium (urothelial cells that line the urothelial tract)
  • Micropapillary Urothelial Carcinoma is diagnosed under a microscope, on examination of the cancer cells by a pathologist. The classification of the tumor is important, as it may dictate the type of treatments to be provided and the overall outcomes
  • The exact cause of Micropapillary Urothelial Carcinoma is presently unknown. Genetic anomalies involving the ERBB2 gene is frequently described. The condition is noted in middle-aged and older adults. Many contributory factors, such as smoking (a significant risk factor), occupational exposure to chemicals, and prior radiation therapy, are noted
  • The signs and symptoms of Micropapillary Urothelial Carcinoma usually include blood in urine (hematuria), burning sensation on urination, and back pain. Since the tumor is high-grade, it is mostly diagnosed during the later stages, when metastasis to the lymph nodes and other organs has already occurred
  • The treatment may include surgery (radical cystectomy for tumors in the bladder), chemotherapy, and radiation therapy based on the healthcare provider’s assessment. Individuals with Micropapillary Urothelial Carcinoma typically have poor prognoses; the outcomes are much worse than conventional urothelial carcinomas. Individuals who undergo early radical cystectomies are known to have slightly better outcomes
