What is Mangshan Pitviper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Mangshan pitviper (Protobothrops mangshanensis) is a rare venomous snake that is found exclusively in Mangshan, in a relatively small, forested region in south central China, at elevations between 2,200-4,000 feet (about 700-1,300 m). The snake belongs to the subspecies of pit vipers, family Viperidae, and is also known as the elegant pitviper. Pit vipers are termed so, due to the presence of certain heat-sensing organs located in a recess/notch between their eyes and nostrils
  • Mangshan pitviper preys mainly on insects, small mammals, and frogs. It is known to climb plants and trees. The pitviper can grow from anywhere between 4.5 feet to nearly 7 feet in length. The snake is thick and heavy-bodied with a flattened tail. Its head is flat, large, and somewhat triangular in shape with a narrow rounded snout. The body of the snake is green and brown and heavily marked by irregular geometric patterns
  • Mangshan Pitviper Snake Bites can cause moderate to severe envenomation (venom injection), although not much data is available on the snake venom and its potency. Based on information from related species, the signs and symptoms may include localized effects such as pain at the bite site, swelling, and blistering. Systemic symptoms may include tissue damage and necrosis, shock, and bleeding problems
  • Currently, no suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is available for Mangshan Pitviper Snake Bites. Symptomatic treatment is mainly considered that includes wound cleaning and providing breathing support, as needed. The prognosis of the condition with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; although, some reports indicate that deaths have taken place from a lack of quick and suitable treatment
