What is Mangrove Pitviper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The mangrove pitviper (Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus) is a venomous snake found in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is seen in the countries of Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand. The snake belongs to the subspecies of pit vipers, family Viperidae
  • Pit vipers are termed so, due to the presence of certain heat-sensing organs located in a recess/notch between their eyes and nostrils. The mangrove pitviper can grow from under 1.5 feet to slightly over 3.5 feet in length; the males being smaller in size than females
  • It is a nocturnal reptile that preys on small mammals (tree rodents), tree frogs, lizards, and small birds. It is found at altitudes of up to 6,700 feet (about 2,000 m) and inhabits bamboo forests, mangroves, river swamps, and predominantly rocky coasts and tiny islands in the endemic regions. The snake is mostly found on low hanging plants and trees near waterbodies; it is also a good swimmer
  • The snake has a medium-to-stout cylindrical body and a moderate-sized tail. The head of the snake is elongated with a pointed snout, slightly broad, triangular-shaped, and distinct from its neck. The body color of the mangrove pitviper is purple-brown, olive green, or gray, with a white streak along each side. The snake may present large saddle-shaped brown markings with small spots on the sides. Its belly may be white, light green, or pale brown
  • Human contact with the pitviper is generally uncommon. It is an aggressive reptile that can strike furiously and rapidly if disturbed. Mangrove Pitviper Snake Bites can cause moderate envenomation (venom injection) that may rarely result in complications and even deaths without treatment. It is believed that the venom may be a mix of hemotoxins that can cause variable symptoms including severe bleeding issues and shock
  • The signs and symptoms of Mangrove Pitviper Snake Bite may include moderate to severe localized effects such as pain at the bite site, swelling, and blistering. Systemic symptoms may rarely include tissue necrosis, headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and collapse
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, intravenous fluid administration, blood transfusion, and respiratory support, as needed. The prognosis of Mangrove Pitviper Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; without proper treatment, a few deaths have been reported
