What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • Long Q-T Syndrome
  • LQTS (Long QT Syndrome)

What is Long QT Syndrome? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the heart's electrical activity
  • It can cause irregular heartbeats, which can lead to fainting or even sudden death

Who gets Long QT Syndrome? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • The genetic disorder is found in diverse patient populations
  • The exact prevalence of Long QT syndrome is uncertain; but in the US, the prevalence is believed to be about 1 in 2,000 (if not more frequent)
  • Both males and females are at risk for the condition

What are the Risk Factors for Long QT Syndrome? (Predisposing Factors)

  • As Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) is a genetically inherited condition, there are no typical, lifestyle-associated risk factors as such for acquiring LQTS. However, spontaneous mutations are also known to lead to LQTS
  • A family history of the condition would increase one’s odds of getting this condition

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Long QT Syndrome? (Etiology)

  • Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) is caused by mutations in the genes that control the heart's electrical activity
  • These mutations can be inherited from a parent or can occur spontaneously

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Long QT Syndrome?

The signs and symptoms of Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) may include the following:

  • Fainting
  • Palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain

In some cases, people with LQTS may not have any symptoms at all, which means they may not express the gene clinically. This is why the prevalence is thought to be higher than currently assumed from studies.

How is Long QT Syndrome Diagnosed?

Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) is diagnosed through a combination of:

  • Physical examination
  • Family history evaluation
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Genetic testing

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Long QT Syndrome?

The complications of Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) may include:

  • Fainting
  • Seizures
  • Arrhythmias

LQTS can result in sudden death.

How is Long QT Syndrome Treated?

Treatment for Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) may include:

  • Medications to control the heart's rhythm
  • Pacemaker or defibrillator to regulate the heart's rhythm
  • Bringing about lifestyle changes and avoiding the triggers that cause abnormal heart rhythms
  • In some cases, surgery may be necessary

It is important for people with LQTS to work closely with their healthcare team to manage their condition and reduce the risk of complications.

How can Long QT Syndrome be Prevented?

Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) may not be currently preventable. However, there are several ways to reduce the signs and symptoms of LQTS.

  • While the genetic inheritance of the LQTS genes cannot be altered, trigger avoidance may reduce the odds of occurrence of the associated arrhythmias. Such triggers include intense exercise or extreme emotions, loud noises, and flashing lights
  • Also important is the avoidance of medications that may result in a long QT interval on the ECG. QT interval prolongation in genetically susceptible patients increases the odds of triggering arrhythmias

What is the Prognosis of Long QT Syndrome? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

The prognosis for individuals with Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) depends on the severity of the condition and the effectiveness of treatment.

  • With proper management, many individuals with LQTS can lead normal lives
  • However, it is important for those with LQTS to follow their treatment plan and avoid triggers that can cause cardiac arrhythmias
