What is Lilapsophobia? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Lilapsophobia is an excessive and irrational fear of tornadoes and hurricanes. Some individuals with Lilapsophobia may experience anxiety or panic attacks when near severe weather or even when they see images of tornadoes or hurricanes.
  • It can affect individuals of all ages, but it is more common in those who have had a traumatic experience related to severe weather, or who have a family history of anxiety or phobias. The exact cause of Lilapsophobia is not presently known
  • Other signs and symptoms of Lilapsophobia include panic attacks, avoidance of situations where severe weather may occur, such as outdoor activities, and sweating, trembling, rapid heartbeat, etc.
  • The diagnosis is usually based on the individual's symptoms and medical history. Lilapsophobia can be treated using a variety of approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and medications to help manage the symptoms
