What is Lataste's Viper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Lataste's viper (Vipera latastei) is a venomous snake found in some parts of Europe and northwestern Africa including in the nations Algeria, Morocco, Spain, and Tunisia. The snake belongs to the viper family or Viperidae and is found in altitudes ranging from mean sea level to up to 9,900 feet (3,030 m). There are several subspecies of Vipera latastei
  • The Lataste's viper can grow to a maximum size of about 2.5 feet or so (males are larger than females), but the average adult size is often less than 1.5 feet. The Lataste's viper is a land-dwelling reptile that is seen in dense forests, dry, rocky, wooded terrain, and in coastal scrub regions at lower elevations
  • The snake has a medium-sized to stout body with a short tail that may be tipped yellow. It has a narrow triangular-shaped head that is distinct from the neck with an upwards pointing snout (snub-nosed). Lataste's viper may be brown, red-brown, or pale gray with well-defined dark zig-zag patterns on its back along-with small diamond-like markings. On sandy soil, the viper uses sidewinding for movement, which may be described as “sideways slithering” action
  • Lataste's vipers are nocturnal in nature during the summer months, but diurnal during the colder seasons. The snake is an ambush predator that mostly preys on small mammals and sometimes on ground birds and lizards; the snake is also known to climb small trees. In general, the snake is easily irritable, and does not hesitate to strike under little provocation
  • Lataste's Viper Snake Bites can result in systemic envenomation (venom injection) but are not typically known to result in fatalities. The venom contains mild to moderately potent hemotoxins that can rarely cause bleeding issues and low blood pressure
  • The signs and symptoms of Lataste's Viper Snake Bite may include pain, bruising, and swelling at the bite site, which may be progressively followed by tissue necrosis, nausea and vomiting, abnormal breathing issues, dizziness, shock, and collapse, in severe cases, necessitating immediate treatment
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, respiratory support, and blood transfusions. The prognosis of Lataste's Viper Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good
