What is Jararacussu Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

• The Jararacussu snake (Bothrops jararacussu) is a highly venomous snake that ranges in size from nearly 3 feet to over 7 feet in length. The snake belongs to the subspecies of pit vipers, family Viperidae. Pit vipers are termed so, due to the presence of certain heat-sensing organs located in a recess/notch between their eyes and nostrils
• This forest-dwelling reptile is found at elevations of up to 2,300 feet (700 m) in the tropical rainforests and semi-deciduous forests, in evergreen (pine) forests, including in the marshy regions of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay in the South American continent. It is a nocturnal snake that preys mainly on frogs and other small mammals (rodents)
• The Jararacussu snake has a medium to heavy sized body. The head of the snake is broad and shaped like a lance (spear) and distinct from its neck. The snake color and patterns are highly variable, but the body color can be tan, yellow, or nearly black. Also, a series of dark “X” patterns with white-edges may be seen along each side
• Jararacussu Snake Bites involving humans are uncommon. Even though infrequent, a bite from a fully-grown snake has the potential to result in severe envenomation (venom injection) with significant symptoms, in the absence of adequate treatment. The rate of envenomation is over 80%. The snake venom is a potent mix of hemotoxins and myotoxins; it can cause hypovolemic shock and renal failure
• In general, the signs and symptoms of Jararacussu Snake Bite may include moderate to severe pain at the bite site and local swelling with bruising, blistering, and tissue necrosis. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include the use of pain medication, wound care, blood transfusion, and breathing support, if needed. The prognosis of Jararacussu Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; about 10% of the untreated cases can result in deaths
