What is Intermediate Mamushi Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The intermediate Mamushi (Gloydius intermedius) is a moderately venomous snake that is found in west and north Asia, in the countries of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Russia. The snake belongs to the subspecies of pit vipers, family Viperidae. Pit vipers are termed so, due to the presence of certain heat-sensing organs located in a recess/notch between their eyes and nostrils
  • The intermediate Mamushi preys mainly on rodents, lizards, frogs and large insects. It is a mostly nocturnal reptile that can be found on mountain sides, shrublands, rocky grasslands, meadows, and open woodlands. The snake can grow from anywhere between 1.5 feet to almost 3 feet in length
  • It snake has a medium-sized to heavy body and a short tapering tail. The head of the snake is darker than its body; it is broad, flat, triangular-shaped, and distinct from its neck. The snake has a slightly upturned snout. The body color may be brown, red, white, gray, or olive green with dark-edged crossbands; its belly may present scattered gray spots
  • Since the snake may be found near to residential settlements, inadvertent contact with humans may take place. Intermediate Mamushi Snake Bites can cause moderate to severe envenomation (venom injection) and possibly result in deaths without early treatment
  • The signs and symptoms of Intermediate Mamushi Snake Bite may include severe localized effects such as pain at the bite site, swelling, and blistering. Systemic symptoms may include lymph node swelling, shock, flaccid paralysis, and renal damage. The venom is a potent mix of neurotoxins and hemotoxins
  • Currently, no suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is available for the Intermediate Mamushi Snake Bite. Symptomatic treatment is mainly considered that includes wound cleaning, intravenous fluid administration, and providing breathing support, as needed. The prognosis of the condition with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; some reports indicate that deaths have taken place from a lack of proper treatment
