What is Infiltrating Urothelial Carcinoma? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Infiltrating Urothelial Carcinoma is a very common subtype of invasive urothelial carcinoma (UCC), which is the most common form of bladder cancer. The origin of the infiltrating variant is from the urinary bladder urothelium (urothelial cells that line the urothelial tract). The carcinoma is generally observed in middle-aged and older adults
  • The exact cause of Infiltrating Urothelial Carcinoma is presently unknown. The involvement of mutations on the CDKN2A, KDM6A, KMT2D, KRAS, and TP53 genes have been reported. Many contributory factors, such as smoking (a significant risk factor), occupational exposure to chemicals, and prior radiation therapy, are noted
  • The signs and symptoms of Infiltrating Urothelial Carcinoma usually include blood in urine (hematuria), burning sensation on urination, back pain, and urinary tract infections. During its advanced stages, the cancer may metastasize to the lymph nodes and other organs
  • Infiltrating Urothelial Carcinoma is diagnosed under the microscope, on examination of the cancer cells by a pathologist. The histological classification of the tumor is important, as it may dictate the type of treatments to be provided and the overall outcomes
  • The treatment of Infiltrating Urothelial Carcinoma may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy based on the healthcare provider’s assessment. The prognosis depends on several factors including on the stage of the cancer, but it is generally difficult to predict the outcomes
