What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • Endometriosis of the Liver

What is Hepatic Endometriosis? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Hepatic Endometriosis is a rare condition in which endometrial-like tissue, similar to the tissue lining the uterus, grows in or on the liver. This abnormal growth can cause abdominal pain, discomfort and even impair liver function
  • Women in their young to middle adulthood are higher prone to the development of this condition. The risk factors are not well known but may include a history of endometriosis. The exact cause of Endometriosis of the Liver is not fully understood
  • Imaging and biopsy studies may be used in the diagnosis of Hepatic Endometriosis. Following a diagnosis, the condition may be treated using pain medications and surgical interventions as needed. The prognosis is typically improved following early recognition and adequate treatment of the condition

Who gets Hepatic Endometriosis? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Hepatic Endometriosis primarily affects women of reproductive age, typically between 25 and 40 years. However, it is a rare condition that occurs in a small percentage of women with endometriosis
  • The condition is observed worldwide, and all racial and ethnic groups are generally at risk

What are the Risk Factors for Hepatic Endometriosis? (Predisposing Factors)

  • The risk factors for Hepatic Endometriosis are not well-established
  • However, women with a history of endometriosis in other locations may have a slightly higher risk

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Hepatic Endometriosis? (Etiology)

  • The exact cause of Hepatic Endometriosis is not fully understood
  • It is believed to result from the backward flow of menstrual blood through the fallopian tubes and into the abdominal cavity, leading to the implantation and growth of endometrial tissue in the liver

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Hepatic Endometriosis?

The signs and symptoms of Hepatic Endometriosis may vary from one individual to another and may be mild or severe. These include:

  • Abdominal pain and discomfort
  • Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Irregular bleeding or spotting
  • Fatigue

How is Hepatic Endometriosis Diagnosed?

Diagnostic procedures for Hepatic Endometriosis may include:

  • Medical history and symptom assessment
  • Physical examination
  • Imaging tests: CT, MRI, or ultrasound scans to visualize the liver and detect any abnormalities.
  • Liver biopsy: A sample of liver tissue is taken and examined under a microscope to confirm the presence of endometrial tissue.

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Hepatic Endometriosis?

The complications of Hepatic Endometriosis may include:

  • Liver cysts or nodules
  • Liver dysfunction or impairment
  • Rarely, rupture of liver cysts with internal bleeding

How is Hepatic Endometriosis Treated?

Treatment options for Hepatic Endometriosis may include:

  • Pain management: To alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life
  • Hormonal therapies: To regulate hormone levels and reduce endometrial growth
  • Surgical excision: Rarely, surgery may be performed to remove endometrial tissue from the liver

How can Hepatic Endometriosis be Prevented?

Presently, specific prevention methods for Hepatic Endometriosis are not available. Early diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis, in general, may help prevent its spread to the liver.

What is the Prognosis of Hepatic Endometriosis? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

  • The prognosis of Hepatic Endometriosis depends on the extent of the condition, response to treatment, and the overall health of the individual
  • With appropriate management, many women can find relief from symptoms and improve liver function
