What is Headache Attributed to Other Non-Vascular Intracranial Disorder? (Definition/Background Information)

Headache Attributed to Other Non-Vascular Intracranial Disorder is a headache disorder that occurs secondary to any non-vascular intracranial disorder, except for the following (since described elsewhere):

  • Conditions causing increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure such as:
    • Idiopathic intracranial hypertension
    • Intracranial hypertension from metabolic, toxic or hormonal cause
    • Intracranial hypertension from chromosomal disorder
    • Intracranial hypertension from hydrocephalus
  • Conditions causing low cerebrospinal fluid pressure such as:
    • Post-dural puncture procedure
    • Cerebrospinal fluid fistula
    • Spontaneous intracranial hypotension
  • Non-infectious inflammatory intracranial diseases such as:
    • Neurosarcoidosis
    • Aseptic (non-infectious) meningitis
    • Lymphocytic hypophysitis
    • HaNDL syndrome
  • Intracranial neoplasia, including:
    • Colloid cyst of the third ventricle
    • Carcinomatous meningitis
    • Hypothalamic or pituitary hypersecretion or hyposecretion
    • Intrathecal injection
  • Epileptic seizures
  • Chiari malformation type I

The headache that develops is known to improve and regress on undertaking suitable management of the underlying non-vascular intracranial disorder. Similarly, a progression of the disorder, in the absence of adequate treatment, can worsen the headache.

The criteria for diagnosis of Headache Attributed to Other Non-Vascular Intracranial Disorder as outlined by the International Headache Society (IHS) is given below:

  • A non-vascular intracranial disorder known to be able to cause headache, other than those described above, has been demonstrated
  • Any headache fulfilling the criterion below

Evidence of causation demonstrated by at least two of the following:

  • Headache has developed in temporal relation to the onset of the non-vascular intracranial disorder
  • Either or both of the following
    • Headache has developed or significantly worsened in parallel with worsening of the non-vascular intracranial disorder
    • Headache has significantly improved in parallel with improvement of the non-vascular intracranial disorder
  • Headache has characteristics typical for the non-vascular intracranial disorder
  • Other evidence exists of causation

Not better accounted for by another ICHD-3 diagnosis.
