What is Headache Attributed to Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Headache Attributed to Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma is a headache disorder that occurs secondary to acute angle-closure glaucoma. Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders in which the optic nerves connecting the eyes and the brain are progressively damaged, leading to reduced peripheral vision and potential blindness
  • Apart from the one-sided headache (depending on whether the right or left eye is involved), acute angle-closure glaucoma can cause pain around the eye sockets, swelling of the eye, blurry vision, red eye, and nausea and vomiting. Untreated cases and/or late diagnosis can potentially result in blindness
  • A progression of the eye disorder in the absence of adequate treatment, can worsen the headache. The headache is known to improve and regress on undertaking suitable management of the underlying disorder

The criteria for diagnosis of Headache Attributed to Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma as outlined by the International Headache Society (IHS) is given below:

  • Clinical, laboratory and/or imaging evidence of an eye disorder known to be able to cause headache
  • Any headache fulfilling the criterion below:

Evidence of causation demonstrated by any of the following:

  • Headache has developed in temporal relation to the onset of the eye disorder
  • Either or both of the following:
    • Headache has significantly worsened in parallel with worsening of the disorder of the eyes
    • Headache has significantly improved in parallel with improvement in disorder of the eyes

Not better accounted for by another ICHD-3 diagnosis.
