What is Fea's Viper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Fea's viper (Azemiops feae) is a mildly venomous snake with a geographic distribution spanning Southeast and North Asia, in the countries of China, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Tibet. The snake belongs to the viper family or Viperidae and is found in altitudes ranging between 2,000 and 6,700 feet (600-2,000 m). It is an elusive reptile and not much information is available on the snake or its venomousness
  • This land-dwelling snake can grow to reach nearly 3.5 feet or so in length, but the mean adult size is less than 1.5 feet. Fea's viper is seen in cool mountain habitats and dense (bamboo) forests. It preys on small rodents, frogs, and lizards, mostly during late evenings to night (nocturnal)
  • The snake has a slender to moderate-sized body with a short tail. It has an oval-shaped flat head that is distinct from its neck with a characteristic broad and rounded snout. The color of the Fea's viper is mostly brown or black with red-orange widely spaced bands with dark borders along the length of the snake. The head color is markedly different and lighter than the body color and is usually light to pale red-orange with two distinct dark stripes
  • Occasionally, the snake’s been spotted near cleared jungles and on cultivated farmlands (paddy fields). Human interactions are very rarely reported. Fea's Viper Snake Bites may occasionally result in severe systemic envenomation (venom injection). The venom is believed to contain potent neurotoxins/hemotoxins, but systemic effects are not well-known. The signs and symptoms may include pain, bruising, and swelling at the bite site
  • There is no specific antivenom (or antivenin) available for this snake bite. Symptomatic treatment is necessary and may include pain medication, wound care, intravenous fluid administration, and breathing support, as required. The prognosis of Fea's Viper Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; deaths have not been reported
