What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • Diaphragmatic Endometriosis

What is Endometriosis of the Diaphragm? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Endometriosis of the Diaphragm is a rare condition where endometrial tissue, similar to the tissue lining the uterus, is found on the diaphragm, the dome-shaped muscle below the lungs. This abnormal growth can cause chest pain and other symptoms, including breathing difficulties
  • Women in their young to middle adulthood are higher prone to the development of this condition. The risk factors are not well known but may include a history of pelvic endometriosis. The exact cause of Diaphragmatic Endometriosis is not fully understood
  • Imaging and laparoscopic studies may be used in the diagnosis of Endometriosis of the Diaphragm. Following a diagnosis, the condition may be treated using pain medications and surgical interventions as needed. The prognosis is typically improved following early recognition and adequate treatment of the condition

Who gets Endometriosis of the Diaphragm? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Endometriosis of the Diaphragm can occur in women of reproductive age, typically between 20 and 40 years
  • The condition is observed worldwide, and all racial and ethnic groups are generally at risk

What are the Risk Factors for Endometriosis of the Diaphragm? (Predisposing Factors)

  • The risk factors for Endometriosis of the Diaphragm are not well-established due to its rarity
  • However, women with a history of pelvic endometriosis may have a slightly higher risk

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Endometriosis of the Diaphragm? (Etiology)

  • The exact cause of Endometriosis of the Diaphragm is not fully understood
  • It is believed to result from the abnormal migration of endometrial cells through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to the diaphragm

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Endometriosis of the Diaphragm?

The signs and symptoms of Endometriosis of the Diaphragm may vary from one individual to another and may be mild or severe. These include:

  • Pain in the upper abdomen or chest, which may worsen during menstruation
  • Pain in the shoulder or arm on the affected side, known as referred pain
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Nausea and vomiting (rare)

How is Endometriosis of the Diaphragm Diagnosed?

The diagnostic procedures for Endometriosis of the Diaphragm may include:

  • Medical history and symptom assessment
  • Physical examination
  • Pelvic examination: To check for any pelvic endometriosis associated with diaphragmatic involvement
  • Imaging tests, such as ultrasound or MRI scans, to visualize the diaphragm and detect endometrial growths
  • Laparoscopy: A minimally-invasive surgical procedure to directly visualize and biopsy the diaphragm

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Endometriosis of the Diaphragm?

The complications of Endometriosis of the Diaphragm may include:

  • Adhesions and scarring on the diaphragm
  • Recurrent pain and discomfort
  • Potential impact on lung function (rare)

How is Endometriosis of the Diaphragm Treated?

The treatment options for Endometriosis of the Diaphragm may include:

  • Hormonal therapies: To regulate hormone levels and reduce endometrial growth
  • Surgery: Laparoscopic excision of endometrial implants on the diaphragm
  • Pain management: To alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life

How can Endometriosis of the Diaphragm be Prevented?

As the cause is not fully known, specific prevention methods for Endometriosis of the Diaphragm are unavailable. Early diagnosis and treatment of pelvic endometriosis may help prevent its spread to the diaphragm.

What is the Prognosis of Endometriosis of the Diaphragm? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

  • The prognosis of Endometriosis of the Diaphragm depends on the extent of the condition, response to treatment, and the presence of complications
  • With proper management, many women can experience symptom relief and improved quality of life
