What is Endometrioid Carcinoma of the Urinary Tract? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Endometrioid Carcinoma of the Urinary Tract is an exceedingly rare form of malignancy that is noted in the urinary bladder, followed by the ureter. It is believed that the tumor origin is associated with ectopic Müllerian embryogenesis, meaning it could arise from abnormal embryological tissue remnants during fetal growth and development stage. Nevertheless, the exact cause of formation of the tumor is not well understood
  • The tumor is typically present in middle-aged and older women; the tumor may develop against a setting of endometriosis (there is a 1% likelihood), arising at genitourinary sites that are most vulnerable to endometriosis. The malignant transformation of endometriosis in genitourinary organs is a very rare phenomenon. The risk factors for such malignant transformations includes hormonal estrogen replacement therapy
  • In most cases, a solid tumor is noted that can grow to large sizes and may cause obstruction of the urinary tract. The signs and symptoms of Endometrioid Carcinoma of the Urinary Tract may include painless or intermittent blood in urine (hematuria), burning sensation on urination (usually during menstrual period in women), and a frequent urge to urinate (when the urinary bladder is involved); and pelvic pain and swelling of one of the kidneys (when the ureter is involved)
  • The tumor is diagnosed by a pathologist on examination of a specimen sample under the microscope. The differential diagnosis for Urinary Tract Endometrioid Carcinoma includes urothelial carcinoma with glandular differentiation, urachal adenocarcinoma, and metastatic tumors to the region. The mainstay of treatment is surgical excision of the tumor. The prognosis of Endometrioid Carcinoma of the Urinary Tract generally depends on the stage of the tumor
