What is Egyptian Cobra Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Egyptian cobra (Naja haje) is a highly venomous and widely distributed snake across several countries of North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. This large reptile belongs to the Elapidae family (genus Naja or cobra), which generally includes slender and swift moving snakes. It is also known variously as the Arabian cobra and African banded cobra and is found at elevations of up to 5,200 feet (1,600 m)
  • This moderately slender and robust-bodied snake can grow from around 4.5 feet to nearly 8.5 feet in length. The snake has a flat broad head, rounded snout, and medium to large eyes; the head and neck are slightly distinct from each other. Like most cobras, the head and neck of the Egyptian cobra can spread into a long hood; the throat usually displays a dark brown/black band. The snake has a generally long tail
  • It has a glossy body, although the color of the snake may change from one geographical region to another. It is usually brown to red-brown, or blue-black, or yellow-gray in color; some specimens are entirely black. The body may be marked by numerous dark spots (mottled appearance). The underbelly of the snake may be dark brown, yellow-brown, cream-colored, gray to blue-gray, or black
  • The snake is terrestrial and feeds on toads (mainly), small mammals (rodents), birds and their eggs, and even other snakes. It prefers to hunt during late evenings or nights. The Egyptian cobra inhabits dry and wet savannahs, areas of low vegetation, rocky hillsides, dilapidated structures, and often near cultivated lands. The snake is not seen in dense forests and hot-dry deserts; it is frequently found near water sources. It generally prefers to take shelter at the same location such as among rocky outcrops, in rodent burrows, or termite mounds
  • Contact with humans is regularly observed in the endemic regions, and Egyptian Cobra Snake Bites are common. In search of food, the snake frequents areas around human settlements. It is known to enter poultry farms at nights. The cobra is described as being moderately aggressive. It initially tries to escape when disturbed, but may quickly turn around to confront its pursuer with raised forebody and expanded hood display, threatening to strike
  • The snake can inject large quantities of venom into its victim. The potency of venom is also dependent upon the geographical region; Egyptian cobras in northern Africa are more venomous than those found in the southern and western regions. Egyptian Cobra Snake Bites can result in fatalities due to systemic envenomation (venom injection through a bite), if the condition is left untreated
  • The venom is believed to contain potent neurotoxins and cytotoxins. Significant symptoms, such as tissue necrosis, flaccid paralysis, and respiratory distress, may be noted. The signs and symptoms may include moderate to severe local pain, swelling, and blistering at the bite site, which may progress to headache, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, seizures, dizziness, and collapse
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment that may include pain medication, wound care, intravenous fluid administration, and respiratory support may be necessary. The prognosis of Egyptian Cobra Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good; but without adequate treatment, the condition can be fatal
