What are the other Names for this Condition? (Also known as/Synonyms)

  • EPT (Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue)

What is Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue? (Definition/Background Information)

  • Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue (EPT) is parathyroid tissue found in an abnormal location. It is most commonly found in the mediastinum (the space between the lungs), but it can also be found in the neck, abdomen, or pelvis
  • Even though the cause of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue is unknown, some of the factors that may influence its development include a positive family history of the condition, prior surgery to the parathyroid glands, and certain genetic disorders
  • The signs and symptoms of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue may include fatigue, bone pain, increased blood calcium levels, and the formation of kidney stones. A diagnosis of the condition involves measuring parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in the blood, followed by a tissue biopsy
  • The treatment of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue may include surgery, the use of medication, or radiation therapy, based on the healthcare provider’s assessment. The prognosis of the condition is improved with early diagnosis and treatment, and it can vary from one individual to another

Who gets Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue? (Age and Sex Distribution)

  • Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue may be observed in individuals of any age group
  • Both males and females are affected
  • Presently, no racial or ethnic group preference is reported

What are the Risk Factors for Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue? (Predisposing Factors)

The risk factors for Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue include:

  • A family history of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue
  • Certain genetic syndromes, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN type I and MEN type Iia)
  • Previous surgery on the parathyroid glands

It is important to note that having a risk factor does not mean that one will get the condition. A risk factor increases one’s chances of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors. Some risk factors are more important than others.

Also, not having a risk factor does not mean that an individual will not get the condition. It is always important to discuss the effect of risk factors with your healthcare provider.

What are the Causes of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue? (Etiology)

Currently, the exact cause of the formation of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue is not well-understood. However, it is thought to be caused by a defect in the development of the parathyroid glands.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue?

The signs and symptoms of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue can vary depending on the location of the ectopic tissue. Some common signs and symptoms include:

  • Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
  • Fatigue
  • Bone pain
  • Kidney stones
  • Constipation
  • Frequent urination

How is Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue Diagnosed?

  • Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue is diagnosed with a blood test to measure parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels
  • If PTH levels are high, a healthcare provider may order a biopsy of the Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue to confirm the diagnosis

Many clinical conditions may have similar signs and symptoms. Your healthcare provider may perform additional tests to rule out other clinical conditions to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

What are the possible Complications of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue?

The complications of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue can include:

  • Nerve damage
  • Infection
  • Recurrence of the condition
  • Treatment side effects

How is Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue Treated?

The treatment for Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue depends on the location of the ectopic tissue and the severity of the signs and symptoms.

  • If the ectopic tissue is located in an easily accessible location, it may be removed surgically
  • If the ectopic tissue is located in a more difficult location, it may be treated with medication or radiation therapy

How can Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue be Prevented?

Currently, there are no available measures to prevent Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue. However, early detection and treatment can improve the chances of a successful outcome.

What is the Prognosis of Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue? (Outcomes/Resolutions)

The prognosis for Ectopic Parathyroid Tissue depends on the location of the ectopic tissue and the severity of the symptoms.

  • If the ectopic tissue is located in an easily accessible location and the symptoms are mild, the prognosis is generally good
  • If the ectopic tissue is located in a more difficult location and the symptoms are severe, the prognosis may be adversely affected
