What is Diadem Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The diadem snake (Spalerosophis diadema) is a non-venomous snake (mildly venomous per some literature) that belongs to the largest snake family called Colubridae. There are four different subspecies of diadem snakes that are widely distributed across several geographical regions, including Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and West Asia. These are seen in altitudes up to 7,200 feet (2,200 m)
  • The diadem snake is also known as the royal snake. The snake is found in sandy deserts, semi-dry rocky regions, and on agricultural lands. It is mostly active during the daytime, except during hot summer months when it hunts during late evenings or at night, feeding mainly on small mammals (rodents such as mice and rats), lizards, and birds. The snake’s venom is very potent for its small prey. It usually takes shelter under loose rocks, under twisted plant roots, and in animal burrows
  • This land-dwelling snake ranges in size from nearly 3 feet to over 6.5 feet in length. The diadem snake has a uniformly cylindrical and somewhat slender body with a medium-sized tail. The head, with a rounded snout, is triangular and elongated, and distinct from its neck. The body color of the diadem snake is usually sandy grey to brownish yellow; it has a white belly. A pattern of dark blotches and spots may be observed on its back
  • This quick-moving snake is known to generally flee when disturbed. However, if provoked, it can thrash its body around and strike menacingly. Human contact with this snake is not commonly reported and Diadem Snake Bites are rare. Also, since the snake is generally non-venomous to humans, the snake bite does not cause any envenomation and lethality potential is absent
  • There may be some mild effects at the bite site, including pain, swelling, and local numbness. However, no significant systemic symptoms are observed. A treatment of the condition may involve wound cleaning, steps to prevent secondary infections, and tetanus shots, as needed. Individuals with Diadem Snake Bites have usually excellent prognoses with proper treatment
