What is Costa Rican Coral Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The Costa Rican coral snake (Micrurus mosquitensis) is a moderately venomous snake found in Central America in the nations of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, and some Caribbean islands. The snake belongs to the Elapidae family that generally includes slender and swift moving snakes, of genus coral snakes (Micrurus) that form a large group of elegant and ‘mostly’ brightly colored and banded venomous reptiles. The snake is sometimes classified as a subspecies of Micrurus nigrocinctus, the Central American coral snake, by some experts
  • The body of the snake is medium-sized, and it has a moderate, rounded head and blunt snout. Unlike most coral snakes, the head of the Costa Rican coral snake is slightly larger than its neck. The snake’s body is typically cylindrical and uniform in size; it has a slightly long pointed tail. The tail does not mimic the head, such as noted in some other coral snake species
  • Like many colorful and glossy coral snakes, the Costa Rican coral snake is characterized by a black head/snout followed by a yellow band. The snake presents broad red and black bands, each band separated by narrower yellow rings. The snake’s tail may have alternating black and yellow bands. The snake may range in size from about 2 to 2.5 feet in length
  • The Costa Rican coral snake is terrestrial and generally feeds on small lizards and other snakes, which it hunts during late evenings to night. The snake is found in the tropical and subtropical rainforests within the endemic regions. The snake may be sighted under fallen leaves, tree trunks, and beneath stones. Infrequently, it may enter homes and take shelter under the wooden floors of the house. The snake is generally observed from mean sea level to up to 4,900 feet (1,500 m) elevations
  • Like many coral snakes, the snake is typically solitary and docile and tends to silently move away when disturbed. Costa Rican Coral Snake Bites can rarely result in fatalities due to systemic envenomation (venom injection through a bite) in the absence of treatment. The potent myotoxic-neurotoxic venom released can cause systemic effects including significant muscle damage and respiratory distress
  • The signs and symptoms of Costa Rican Coral Snake Bite may include mild local effects at the bite site such as pain and swelling. As various body systems gets rapidly affected by the venom, it can result in widespread symptoms including convulsions, dizziness, severe flaccid paralysis, and kidney failure
  • Early administration of suitable antivenom (or antivenin) is the mainstay of treatment. Apart from this, symptomatic treatment is necessary, which may include pain medication, intravenous fluid administration, respiratory support, and peritoneal dialysis, as needed. The prognosis of Costa Rican Coral Snake Bite with prompt and effective therapy is usually good, but deaths have been reported without adequate treatment
